Please Note: This page describes how to download a demonstration copy of The Data Magician software. This version has all of the features of the full version, except that it is limited to converting only the first 10 records of a file.
The software is intended to be accompanied by the printed manual. If you wish to order a copy of the manual, the cost is $25 (plus tax and shipping). That price will be reduced from the full copy price if you choose to purchase the full version. Otherwise, here are some brief notes on downloading and installing the demo as well as how to run a sample data conversion.

Download the complete archive:  DEMO1520.EXE.  We suggest that you put this
in a temporary directory, such as  \TEMP.  You will then execute the following
commands (these are given as DOS commands, but can also be done using
appropriate functions in Windows Explorer or File Manager):

   1)   MKDIR \DATAMAGE         (This should be done on whatever drive you
                                 you want Data Magician installed on)

   2)   CD \DATAMAGE

   3)   \TEMP\DEMO1520.EXE       (This runs the self-extracting archive)

   4)   DATAMAGE.EXE            (This runs the Data Magician program)

   5)   Try "L" to load a settings file, and try CANPROC.SET  (which converts
        some CAN/OLE records in a "tagged" format to ProCite in a comma-
        delimited format.

   6)   At the conversion summary screen, you are shown the name of the input
        file, the output file and comments.  Press Shift-F6 to see the
        incoming file format.  You may scroll around and look at the input
        file.  Press Esc to get out of that.  Then press "Y" and Enter to
        begin the conversion.  You will see the Conversion Statistics screen
        as the conversion progresses (it should take less than a minute).
        When it is done, it will ask if you wish to quit.  Say "N" for now,
        and you will return to the Conversion Summary screen.  Press Ctrl-F6
        to see the results of the conversion (the ProCite comma-delimited
        file).  Scroll around and press Esc when you're finished.

   7)   You can try other conversions by pressing Alt-L and giving the name
        of the settings file you wish to load.  Press "Y" to begin.  You can
        look at many of the incoming files, but some are not designed to be
        viewed, including dBase files and MARC Communications format.  They
        will look rather strange if you try.  Just press Esc to get out of
        them.

   8)   You may also wish to look at the conversion parameters.  Here are a
        few basic keystrokes for "getting around":
                Alt-A   check the Input File parameters
                Alt-B   check the Output File parameters
                Alt-I   look at the Input Fields
                Alt-O   look at the Output Fields
                Alt-C   go to the Conversion Summary screen
                Alt-M   go to the MAin Menu
                arrows  move around in the current screen
                PgUp/PgDn       move between screens
                Alt-X   Exit The Data Magician
